Consumers Energy Wins Prestigious Governor's Environmental Award
DES MOINES — May 11, 2006. Consumers Energy, Marshalltown, has been named a recipient of an award for Special Recognition in Energy Efficiency/Renewable Energy for 2005 and was honored by Lieutenant Governor of Iowa, Sally Pederson, at an awards ceremony on May 11, 2006, in Des Moines.
The honors are part of the Governor’s Iowa Environmental Excellence Awards, a program that honors organizations, businesses and individuals for their leadership and innovation in protecting Iowa’s natural resources.
In the spring of 2005, Consumers Energy partnered with Hubbell Homes, Ground Source Innovations and Northern Geothermal Corporation to develop and implement a one-of-a-kind renewable energy project. The group installed geothermal heating and cooling units in 112 three-story, multi-family dwellings with 1,500 sq. ft. in living space. The units are part of the Creekside-Brownstone housing development in northern Ankeny. “The geothermal units will reduce electric consumption by more than 871,000 kWh per year, resulting in a cost savings of $715 per household per year for individuals living in the development,” states Brian Heithoff, CEO/General Manager of Consumers Energy. Along with geothermal installations, the townhouses use Energy Star® dishwashers, refrigerators, and clothes washers. Consumers Energy also provided 112 high-efficiency 50-gallon Marathon electric water heaters for this project. According to Rick Tollakson, president and CEO of Hubbell Homes, homeowners in Creekside have already realized savings. “Our homeowners have responded tremendously to this aspect of the project and due to its success, we are incorporating geothermal into two other housing projects across the metro.”
The awards program recognizes comprehensive environmental programs by organizations, along with special project awards in water quality, air quality, waste management, habitat restoration/development and energy efficiency/renewable energy.
The awards are sponsored by the Governor’s Office, the Department of Natural Resources, the Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship, the Department of Economic Development, the Department of Education, the Department of Public Health and the Iowa Waste Reduction Center.
